As yoga teachers most of us believe that yoga is for everyone, that our classes and studios are accessible and open to all.
However, the dominant discourse around yoga is one that by its nature can appear exclusive. For many people, for many reasons, attending a yoga class does not feel accessible. Power dynamics, social class, geography, trauma and mental health all play a complex part in this culture and in order to change it we must first understand it.
As yoga teachers we need to be explicit and deliberate in our efforts to offer the benefits yoga to everyone. This talk will explore how Edinburgh Community Yoga has approached this work, discuss why it is important and will open and encourage discussion around challenges and successes around making yoga more accessible in Scotland.
NOTE: for every ticket sold a donation will be made to ECY behalf of Scottish Yoga Conference and our fellow yogis.

A focus on one of the most important aspects of our physical practice and the most challenging to master. Explore depth of your body by connecting to the natural curves of your spine and the muscles that support it. Lengthen and tone all the muscles surrounding your diaphragm to restore natural freedom of breath for maximum energy. Through this deep exploration you will work to unlock your ability to get into deep side bends, back bends, and twists without pain, strain or discomfort.
The shoulders hold a huge amount of tension. This area of the body is designed to hold the head up and assist in the movement of the arms and when alignment suffers (perhaps from sitting at a desk or other modern day scenarios) these muscles bind like straps to hold the body upright.
Be proud of your victories, failures, progress and scars. When a bowl is broken in Japan it is put back together and the cracks are filled with gold, creating a beautiful lining. This is to emphasize the beauty in healing what was once broken. None of us are broken beyond repair. Let’s turn our shared experiences in life into new and useful, inspiring perspectives. Let’s: CUT CLEAR.
In this closing session, we connect quality movement with shared mind introspection. Filled with humor and heart medicine, we will weave movement experience together with a thoroughly modern look on how the way you move reflects on your relationship with everything. Encouraging everyone to live their lives authentically and in full totality, embracing the sheer fact of being alive, here and now. Break through old dis-empowering stories and invent yourself new: an honest you, built by new insights, resulting in a clear-cut representation of who truly you are.
I expect you to move beyond ‘should.’ You and only you: know who you are, know what to eat, and know how to live. Walk your talk. Seal your Deal. Feel connected, whole, encouraged and ready to contribute your highest.
“Beauty is what grows from the raw waters, it comes organically. Cannot be tried, forced, or efforted. sprouts from the real. Truth. It will only ever arise from relaxation. Being vulnerable. Surrendering into moments that pass by given. Gifted from LIFE.” – Sonia Taylor Bach
